Donations
The original goal of the Christmas Gift Bags for the Homeless was 50 bags. Over the years the goal has been doubled and, in 2009, 480 bags were distributed to homeless adults along with 40 backpacks for homeless children. The board added Summer Relief Bags in June 2010; 480 bags were filled with items to beat the Texas heat for Fort Worth homeless adults. In 2010, the bar was raised once again when the board set the goal at 600 adult Winter Relief Bags. The Labre Society plans to continue to provide bags twice a year and is looking at other ways to expand giving on an ongoing basis.
Businesses in the Fort Worth area have come on board as strong supporters of the bags. From 2007 to 2017, the Fort Worth Transportation Authority donated 2 all-day bus passes for each bag. This contribution was significant in that the cost of purchasing bus passes is the single biggest line item in each year’s budget. Ben E. Keith Company has contributed food and bottled water for the bags since 2008, increasing its original donation from apples and oranges to most of the food/water now given.
Other businesses have provided storage space for the large volume of items to be packed, packing venues, and sponsorship of items for the bags.
