About Us
The Labre Society is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide items of basic living necessity to those experiencing homelessness in Tarrant County, Texas. We believe that those who have no home and virtually no belongings deserve the most basic items necessary to make it through a day on the streets. To that end, the Labre Society distributes bags containing basic necessities twice a year to the homeless living in Fort Worth. There are no strings attached to receiving the bags and all are freely given in the spirit of looking after our fellow humans.
The organization takes its name from Benedict Joseph Labre, the patron saint of homeless. Labre became a pilgrim around the age of sixteen, traveling to shrines throughout Europe and surviving only on the food he received as a result of begging. He did, however, share what he received to those he felt were worse off than himself. In addition to sharing food to those he encountered, it is believed that he healed some of his fellow homeless.
While the Labre Society is not affiliated with any religious organizations, its board of directors chose the phrase, “whatsoever you do . . .” (Matthew 25:40), as a reminder that everyone, regardless of income, housing, drug/alcohol abuse or mental illness, should be recognized as having worth. This entitles all people to have access to the basic necessities most of us take for granted.
The Labre Society is an all-volunteer organization and board members receive no monetary compensation. Operating expenses come from annual board dues, so one hundred percent of the donations we receive go to provide the bags and items within. Items are purchased at wholesale prices to ensure donations are leveraged to the biggest extent possible.
We encourage you to join us in our efforts to help the often forgotten and invisible among us.
